INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.

. : — «, The annual statutory meeting of the Borough Council for the installation of the Mayor-elect for the ensuing term of offifce,' was held in the Borough Chambers on "Wednesday at noon. There were present, Messrs J. M'Corley (retiring Mayor), in the chair, J. Bamage, P. Nelson, J. Dunne, D. Stewart, H. M'Leod, and D. T. Fleming Mayor-elect. - The Mayor said they had met . for the purpose of installing his successor in office. Before vacating the chair he wished to thank . the council for the support and courtesy they had extended to him during his term of office. No doubt he had made mistakes, but the council had treated these with leniency. He had no doubt the council would extend to his successor the same support arid courtesy they had extended to him. He hoped the- dark cloud that had led to his -removal from Balclutha, would speedily lift, so that' he might resume his former position amongst them. 5 Hi- D. T. Fleming then made the statutory declaration and took the chair. Mr Stewart congratulated the Mayor on his election to the office. He hoped his election was the dawn of an era of, prosperity for Balelutha. The late mayor had done "his duty to the township during his term of office, and he had no doubt his successor would show an equally good record at the expiry of the year. Mr Dunne said he wished to congratulate Mr Fleming on his installation to the important office of Mayor of Balelutha. He had given great satisfaction as a councillor, and he had no doubt he would carry out the duties of the office of mayor with credit and honor, both to himself and the community, and that he and the Council would work' together with the greatest harmony, The Mayor thanked Mr M'Corley and the councillors for their congratulations, and for iho kind things things they, had said regarding him. He would in all matters pertaining to his duties consult the council, and he had no doubt they would work harmoniously together for the best interests of the Borough. He was sorry Mr M'Corley had left Balelutha,, but hoped they would all shortly hear of Yfixit, occupying in Kaitangata similar offices to those he had in Balelutha.
