INQUIRY WANTED.

Some time ago we published a number of letters that had passed between Patrick Glinnan, of Owaka, and' the Public Works department with reference to the Glenomaru railway bridge. At that time, the bridge being vested in the railway authorities, the Public Works department would do nothing, and the bridge being duly passed by the latter before it was handed over to the railway authorities the latter took up*a similar position. Glinnan still maintains that the bridge j is faulty in construction, and the residents of | Owaka — with a view of giving Glinnan, who i has for his perhaps unwise expression of opinions about this bridge suffered imprisonment, an opportunity of proving whether what he says is right or wrong — are petitioning for an enquiry. Q-linnan has never had an opportunity of doing this, and now that the Railway Commissioners Bill will be before the House the present seems a fitting time Ito bring the matter up. The petition, which is to be forwarded to Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.li., for presentation to the Minister of Public Works, and which already bears the signatures of 41 persons, is in the following terms : — " We, the undersigned residents of Glenomaru and Catlins districts, do hereby request that the petition which Mr Patrick Glinnan, of this district, presented to Parliament some time ago re bridge on the railway live at Glenomaru, and which contained the charge of the bridge being unsafe, may be I looked into, and that that portion which he i' can point out which contains the flaw may be tested in his presence, and by doing so it will set at rest all doubts that may have arisen in the minds of settlers who hear his frequent assertions of the bridge being unsafe. We might point out that as Mr P. Glinnan was working at the bridge at the time of its being built he must have some good cause for his com*plaint."
