TAPANUI.

♦-_" (From Our Own. Correspondent.) The great event' of the last week was the visit of the Birch wood Hounds to Tapanui. This has become an annual; fixture, and a number of sportsmen in the district have become members of the Hunt Club. The first run was on Friday last at Crookston. On Saturday the district known as The Elat, which . lies to the south of Tapanui, was favoured, and to it the local residents turned out in great numbers, mostly as onlookers. Mr J. R. Mackenzie had laid out a good run for Monday's turn, and this one proved the most 'difficult of the three runs. No accidents of any importance happened, though a few horses and riders fell. On one of the off days Mr J. A. Mason dislocated his collar bone while practising, but the injury was attended to by Dr Trotter and the sufferer is doing well. That prohibition is not effectual so far may easily be seen by anyone, as on Saturday last supplies of " the cratur " were to be had by anyone seeking them, and not a few sufferers were noticed at night who seemed to have got more than they needed. Although the frosts have been very keen at flight the days have been bright, and, until evening, fairly warm. Ploughing is going ahead, and I notice that many gorse hedges aye« being uprooted and plain wire fences erected in their stead. The members of the Presbyterian church met on Monday evening to moderate in a call to Rev. A. Begg, who has preached with great acceptance for several Sundays. The call from both Tapanui and Waikoikoi was practically unanimous.
