NOTES.

Summonses have been served by the Moderator and managers of the Free Church and the local Presbyteries against the Rev. Donald Macdonald, Shieldaig, Loch Carron ; Rev. Donald Macfarlanr, Raasny, Skye ; and several elders at Kilfinnan, Argyllshire* the purposes of which are to have it declared that ,the. churches in which the defenders worship, and which are retained possession of by tbe/n, are the property of the pursuers, aridi that the defenders, since they do not belong to the Free Church, have no right to them. The defenders left the Free Church in consequence of the passing of the Declaratory Act.

A Cambridge man tells a good story of his first experience of -chloroform when it was a new thing. He bought a small phail of the chemical, put four drops on a handkerchief and inhaled. The effect was pleasant and he tried eight drops. That put him to sleep. The next thing he remembered was hearing a voice ' He's coming to I do believe.' It was so, he was coming to after having been unconscious for two hours and a half. He was puzzled to account for the strong effect of so small a quantity of chloroform, but the explanation came from the servant girl, who made the following confession after she left :— -' You remember that night you was nearly dead, sir. Well, you know, sir, I thought you had fainted, and I see the bottle on the table and thought it was salts, so I took out the stooper and held it to your nose ; but, as it didn't do no good, I poured a lot of it out into my hand and rubbed it all over your nose and mouth.'
