Our Dunedin Letter.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) (Unavoidably held over from last issue.)

• That by-law ' has been agitating the public for the last week or two. Sermons have been preached against it, public meetings have been held, and strong remarks in condemnation of it uttered by the various speakers. On Sunday night, however, the R,ev. Mr Floyd made a strong speech in its favor, and his remarks have been endorsed by large numbers of our citizens. The council met on Monday night to consider its confprmation. There was a large gathering of persons present, who watched the proceedings with great interest. The mayor (Mr H. S. Fish) was in grand form, and in moving the adoption of the by-law, he in very trenchant language gave it to the Revs. Saunders and Gibb, the Hon. Downie Stewart, ,W. „ Hutchison, M.H.R., and others. . Most all the councillors spoke on the matter, and eventually the motion was carried, Councillors Cohen, Solomon, and Gourley voting against it.

The Education Board election is now over, and I understand the final result will be declared on the 14th inst, when the board meets. As far as can be gleaned from the returns published the chosen three are Messrs Macgregor, Cohen, and Fraser. N

The JDunedin flower and fruit show held in the Garrison Hall on Friday night was a great success. The total number of entries in the various classes was 401, and some of the exhibits were exceedingly fine. The attendance of visitors was large.

The Amenities or Reserves Conservation Society, established about seven years ago, and of which Mr A. Bathgate is the indefatigable secretary, is doing very good work in helping to beautify our city, and they are ably seconded by the council, whose reserves in the Octagon are worth going to see, as the 1 flower-beds are very beautiful.
