FEEDING GRAIN TO PIGS.
The miserable prices obtainable for this season's wheat, brings forcibly to our mind the advice given by the late M. Mechi, to the effect that when wheat fell below a certain figure per quarter, farmers would find it pay better to send it to market on four legs than on four wheels. In other words it would pay better to convert it into pork.
The following experience taken from the Ohio Farmer bears on the subject, and may be found equally appreciable to New Zealand. The farmer wrote to the paper referred to saying, 'six weeks ago I penned up, in a half acre lot, . 10 . head of hogs that weighed 11001 b ; when sold they weighed 20601 b. They gained 9601 bin six weeks. During that time they consumed 50 bushels of wheat and 25 bushels of oats, mixed and ground, and nlade into a thick slop. This slop was let stand and sour about 24 hours before feeding. They were fed three times a day. The pigs gained on the 50 bushels of wheat and 25 bushels of oats, 9601 b. They were sold at 6 cents (3d per lb) the, grain 57 OOdols. Counting the oats at 25 cents (ls -|d) a bushel (6*25d015.) and grinding 4 cents a bushel (3d015.), leaving for the 50 bushels of wheat dols. 48*35 cents, or 96 cents per bushel equal 4s per bushel.
