MATAU SHOW.

President : Mr George Inglis ; Vice-presidenk : Mr Geor^i* 11. Gilroy ; Treasurer : Mr Archibald H. Anderson; Hon. Secretary: Mr James M'Kinlay. Committee of Mana^emeut: Messrs William O. Wat.t, Thomas M'Doiuild, John Watt,, Joseph Smith, jun., G'-orge Anderson, Peter Lawson, James Willocks, Sinclair Wright, Alexuuder Alifcchell, John S. Rutherford, John Msicrlonnell, William Kelly, Veter Haqgart. Robert Darling, Alexander Blackie, James Smiill.

The second annual show under the auspices of the Matau Agricultural and Pastoral Society, %vn,s held sit Stirling Oil Tuesday last. Unfortunately, il;s success was somewhat marred by the heavy rain which commenced early in the morning, and continued till about one o'clock. This prevented the usual influx of visitors, and rendered matters disagreeable for those whose business necessitated their attendance throughout the forenoon. In the afternoon the weather was fine, but the change took place too late to be taken advantage of by any from a distance. We believe, however, that the exhibits were all brought forward, and the exhibition was one worthy of the district, and the result must have proved most gratifying to the office-beavers and members of committee. In many of the classes the exhibits were this yoar mnch more numerous than at the first show held by the Society last year. A considerable quantity of stock had also this year been sent from a distance and this gave additional interest to the show. The draught stock were very -veil represented, in which class many of the exhibits would do credit to any district or any country. In thoroughbreds the entries were not numerous nor the exhibits first class. There were some very good weight carrying hacks, but of ladies' hacks there wore onty two representatives — Miss Muir securing first place. In cattle there was a capital show, especially of dairy cows. Th-ore were six entries of shorthorn bulls, any age, and five cows. In the Ayrshire class four cows competed and thero was some fine young stock. But the best show was the cows of any breed, dairy cows, which were a really fine lot and in excellent condition. There were no moriuo sheep ; in Leicesters Mr Willocks had it all to himself and Mr G. Anderson occupied a similar position with Liucolns. Tn dairy produce the entries were numerous and the exhibits first class ; indeed we question if a bettor show in this department has ever been seen in the province. There were sixteen dogs exhibited, but there were difference of opinion as to their merits. There were a few exhibits of poultiy, but some of them were not first class. Mr Nelson exhibited specimens of bricks and drain tiles.. and Mr Gilroy exhibited a.potatoe plough and double mould plough combined which was favourably regarded by those capable of judging of its merits. On the whole the show was a very good one for the district, and the arrangements were promptly and satisfactorily carried out.. The fife and drum band of the Industrial School was on the ground and attracted much attention. There were thirty boys of about 10 years of age, all dressed in uniform, Mr G-. Crosswell, bandmaster, Mr Titchener, superintendent, and his son, who is a teacher in the Institution, The band played at intervals during the day, and the accuracy with which they rendered the various pieces was the subject of general comment. The boys also sang a number of songs in a manner that called forth hearty applause. We have to thank Mr M'Kinlay, the secretary, for supplying all necessary information.
