A destructive explosion of firedamp occurred to-day in the Abvam Colliery, near Wigan, in Lancashire, by which it is feared many lives will be lost. A hr^e number of men were at work in the mine at the time the disaster occurred. Of these, fully 200 have not yet been recovered.

Another murder is reported from Ire* land. A farmer in Athlon c, n town on the borders of Counties Wustmeath and I'oscommon, has been brutally murdered, ifc is supposed at the instigation of the Land League. There lias also been another murder in Ireland, in Comity Kilkenny. Murdets and outrages have been very numerous lately. The total number reported during the month of November is 520.

Strict search has been made for the body of the late Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, which was recently found to have been stolen from the family mausoleum at Dun Echt, near Aberdeen, but without suocess. An anonymous letter has butm rucuived by the relatives of the deceased, dated from Glasgow, in which the writer states that he, assisted by two other men, removed the body from the vault in May last, and that the remains have boon preserved by embalming. There appears to be little doubt that the object of rhe theft is to extort money.

The police authorities in Ireland have itsued circulars offering rewards for secret information which may lead to the arrest of persons guilty of acts of sedition. This step has boon taken in pursuance of the determination of the Government to use the most strenuous efforts to suppress the state of terrorism established in Ireland by the numerous outrages committed at the instigation of the Land League. In connection with the inquiry now being prosecuted by the Royal Commission on the defence of British possessions and commerce abroad, the War Office have decided to despatch LieutenantColonel Grossman, of the Royal Engineers, to report upon the best means of providing for the defence of Colonial harbours.
