INCH CLUTHA.
A public meeting was hold in the Drillshed, Inch Clutha, on Monday evening. There was a large attendance. Mr W. A. Mosley was called to the chair. The Chairman explained that the meeting had been called to let the settlers know how matters stood with reference to the Road and River Board. He explained that a committee had been appointed to examine the books of the late Matau Road Board to find how the accounts stood as between the two subdivisions of that Hoard. This they had done and found that a balance of between L4OQ and LSOO stood iu favour of the Inch Clutha subdivision, that an amount having been expended in the North Molyneux subdivision over and above the sum expended in the Inch Clutha subdivisian. As the Act provided for an adjustment of accounts, as between the two subdivisions he had, no doubt, the new Matau Board would hand over the balance referred to. The Chairman also explained the result of the late deputation to the Government which (as will be seen by a report elsewhere) resulted in the Government agreeing to stop the gaps in the river bank and lend L2500 to the Koad and Kiver Board. He also referred to the state of the roacls within the district, many of which had j been entirely washed away. Resolutions to the following effect were moved by Mr Geo. Bell, seconded by Mr M'Kissock, ■ and carried :— -" That this meeting disapproves of the deviation of road from the bridge through Messrs M'Kenzie, Gilroy, and Shephard's bush as [ recommended by the County Engineer." "That this meeting urges the County Conncil to have the river bank road from the gap at McDonald's property to that at Willock's opened without further delay. " " That the following gentlemen be appointed to petition and wait' upon the County Council with a view to the foregoing resolutions being given effect to : — Messrs J. C. Anderson, G. M'Donald, Geo. Bell, and G. H. Gilroy. Mr J. C. Anderson asked whether the road immediately behind the Drill-shed was under the control of the County, he having been informed that it belonged to the public. He advised that the County Council should be urged to accept of the liberal offer made by the proprietors of the road along the river bank between the gaps at M'Donald's and Willock's provided the Council would undertake to preserve the river bank for the future. Mr W, S. Mosley proposed three hearty cheers for the Government and three for the Hon. James Macandrew for their liberality. Seconded by Mr Geo. Bell. The motion was given effect to by the meeting in a most enthusiastic manner. The proceedings were terminated by the . usual curtsey to the chair.
