LO VELL'S FLAT SCHOO L.
At the meeting of householders on Monday evening Mr John M'Donald presided. After the usual preliminaries the following report of the retiring Committee was read : — " Your Committee have the honour to report that they commenced the year 1878 with a debt due to late Committee of 12 4s fid, and an advance account amounting to Lll 10s, which sums your Committee have been unable to reduce. " The receipts for the year have been L23 10s — viz., L6 from sale of pump, Ll7 10s from Education Board for -fuel, cleaning school, &c. And the expenditure LlB 8s leaving a balance of L5 2s in hancl. Your Committee have ac'cepted an offer from J. C. Gordon to supply 50 loads of earth and gravel from cutting at Lovell's Creek Bridge at 2s per load, which will absorb all the available balance. •■ The other expenditure has all been •connected with the school— viz., Lsbs for a stove, L3 12s 9d for school cleaning, Ll 19s Cd for coals, L3 12s 6d for prizes, and the balance on sundries, including L2 7s for black board. " 7*:" Your Committee desire to draw the attention of their successors to the necessity of having the school buildings insured, as in the event of an accident oc•curing to any of the buildings there would be a considerable expense and loss of time before the Education Board would grant the necessary sum to rebuild them, seeing that the Committee took no steps to have them insured to protect themselves in case of a fire arising in any of the buildings. The Education Board would the more readily grant any necessary sum that was required if they were partly covered by • an insurance policy. " Your Committee desire to draw the attention of the householders in the district to the necessity there is of -sending the children to the school every day. as the capitation grant from the Education Board is paid on the average attendance of the scholars, so that by. keeping the children at home they are reducing the capitation grant, and doing the school and themselves an injury which could be easily avoided by more regular attendance at school, -and also to bear in mind that although the schooling of the children costs them nothing "whether they attend or no," it is as valuable as if it cost them school fees, and ought to be taken advantage of by every person interested in the education of theii children, and the wellfare of the community at large." The report was adopted. . The following gentlemen were then unr ' animously elected" as the Committee for
the ensuing year :— Messrs C. Bowie, J. M'Donaid, R. Duncan, .7. Carmichael, J. Camerou, A. Nelson, and A. Calder. The Chairman then intipiated that the first meeting of Committee would be held on Friday evening, A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the proceedings". '
