MATAU ROAD BOARD.

« — ■ The ordinary monthly meeting of tho above Board was held in Rae's Hotel, Stirling, on Saturday evening, all the members being present, The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Valuation List for the year 1879-80 was laid on the table. The Clerk was instructed to give public notification of same in Cxtjtha Leader according to the Act. The Chairman read a telegram from the Office of the Minister of Public Works, Wellington, in reply to the Board's application for a loan of L6OO to repair flood damages, in^imatating that the Minister was going south in a few days, and would deal with the application then. ' A letter was also read from the Town Clerk, Balclutha, enclosing copy of resolution passed at a meeting of the Balclntha Cemetery Committee, held 3rd December, 1878, asking the Board to contribute the sum of LlO towards improving the Cemetery. After discussion, it was moved by Mr Robertson, and seconded by Mr Aitcheson, that owing the damaged state of the roads within the district, the Board felt unable to contribute in the meantime. A letter was also read from the Inch Clutha River and Road Board re settlement of account between both Boards. Letter received, but no action to be taken at present. A letter was read from Mr Paterson, Engineer, Clutha County Council, asking the Board to purchase the broken stone in the quary at Mr Anderson's. The Chairman pointed out that the road through Stirling would require to be metalled, and the broken stone in the quarry would be very suitable for the purpose. Mr Paterson was willing to give the stone at a fair price. It was m oved by Mr Petrie , and seconded by Mr Nelson, that Mr Paterson 'be offered la fid per yard. — Agreed to. The subject of appointing a Ranger for the Board was then considered. After discussion, it was moved by Mr Robertson, and seconded by Mr Nelson, that Mr John M'Kissock be appointed at a salary of 10s per month. — Agreed to. It was brought under the notice of the Board that people were in the habit of herding cattle on the public roads, thereby damaging the young hedges and trampling in ditches along the road. It was agreed that the Clerk be instructed to inform the Ranger of the same. The Ranger to give the people referred to notice, and if persisted in, to impound. A letter was read from Mr J. 0. Ander- | son in reference to the purchase of land for road near Mr Anderson's residence. After consideration, it was moved by Mr Watt and seconded by Mr Ail.cheson, that a deputation, consisting of Messrs Petrie, Robertson, and Nelson, wait on Mr Anderaoiij and get him to re-consider his terms. It was moved by Mr Petrie, and seconded by Mr Watt, that the ditches on each side of the road through Stirling be cleaned out by day labour. — Agreed to. It was moved by Mr Petrie, and seconded by Mr Robertson, that tenders be called for filling in the breaks in river bank road, near Mr Inglis' property, and also for culvert at large gap ; Mr Nelson and Chairman to prepare plans and speci- • fications for same. Contract to be taken at lump sum. Re the gap at Mr Robertson^ near Kaitangata punt, it was moved by Mr Watt, seconded by Mr Aitcheson, and" carried, that Mr Robertson and Mr Ait--cheson be appointed to prepare plans and specifications^ and to have supervision of same. To be tendered for in lump sum. Mr Robertson brought tinder notice of the Board the necessity of protecting about half a chain of the river bank by piling, near Mr Thomas Muir's property, Kaitangata. It was moved by Mr Watt, seconded by Mr Petrie, that Messrs Robertson, Nelson, and Aitcheson make inspection for works required and report. The condition of the Coal road was then dealt with. Mr Nelson moved that tenders be called for the formation and metalling of 20 chains on Coal road. Expenditure on same not to exceed LIOO. Work to be done, provided the Government loan be received. The cleaning out of the main ditch from ■■ old Manse road to river was then dealt with. It was moved by Mr Rbbeertson, seconded by -Mr -Aitch'eeoß., and eatieisd, ■

that Mr Inglis pay half-cost to clean out the same. The Chairman and Messrs Petrie and Robertson were appointed to wait on the Hon. James Macandrew re the application for loan. ' . The Board then adjourned.
