BOARD OF CONSERVATORS FOR THE INCH CLUTHA RIVER DISTRICT.

A meeting of the above Board was held in the School-house, Inch Clutha, on Saturday afternoon, the special ' object being to take into consideration the classification of lands within the district, and the necessary arrangements in connection therewith. There were presenG — Messrs. Mosly (chairman), Anderson, Smaill, Bell, and M'Donald. The minutes. of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman, reported having written, to Mr Thomson as requested regarding tlie Inch Clutha Bill. He had received no reply, but expected an answer in the course of a few days. — Approved. The Inspector of Works' report was laid on the table. It recommended progress payments to Smith Brothers and George Durno, ahd reported having passed contract No. 4b, river embankment, and protection works contract. — After discussion it was agreed that the following amounts be paid : — Smith Brothers, progress payment/ contract No. 3b ''. ..." ... LSO- 0 0 George Durno, progress payment, contract No. 3r 25 0 0 Huntor and Co.'s account, contract No. 4b 70 12 11 Malcolm M'M'Kinlay, protective works 20 7 fl Mr Anderson and the Clerk reported that the works authorised to be carried out by the Boai'd amounted to L 4300. Further embankments necessary LGSO, and protective works LSOO. The subject of classification of lands was then considered, and after discussion, in which all members of the Board joined, it was moved by Mr Anderson, and seconded by Mr M'Donald, " That there be two classes of land within the district, and lands in township to be classed as town lands, and that ail lands to be classified by Commissioners appointed by the Board"." As an amendment, it was moved by Mr Smaill, and seconded by Mr Bell, "That the district be cKssed into two classes, viz. , Class I— All lands within the body of the Island ; class 2— Balloons, Bends, or Points, as follows :—Pi 1 tan's, original Bend ; Smaills,' Balloon ; Gilroy's, Bend; Baird's, Point ; and land -within township to be classed as town lands." On the above motion and amendment being put to the Board there voted — For amendment : Smaill, Bell, and the Chairman. For motion : Anderson and M'Donald, tho amendment was therefore carried. The Clerk was instructed to publish the classification three times in tlie Cltttha Leader, and have same open for inspection at his office for twenty-one days as provided by the Act. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr George Wilson, Dunedin, asking him +o give permission to the Board of Conservators to construct a main drain through his property on Inch Clutha. It was resolved that the Clerk publish tenders in the Provincial District Gazette according to clause 56 of the Act. It was moved by Mr Anderson, and seconded by Mr Smaill, " That the Board confer with their solicitor in reference to bond for land given by landowners to Board for embankments." — Carried. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr James Shand, Taieri, with reference to bond for land given by landowners for embankments in the Taieri district. It was moved by Mr Bell, seconded by Mr Smaill, " That the excavation made by the contractor for the river embankment alongside of Mr S. Kirkness' house be filled up, so as to allow him free ascess to his house, only a few. loads of earth being required, " — Carried. . It was' resolved that members of the Board make an inspection of ground for embankments near Mr Harvey's, on Monday, the 23rd, to meet at 10 o'clock. It was mojed by Mr Smaill, seconded by Mr M* Donald. " That- .the Chairman and Mr Anderson wait on Mr .T. T.. Ritchie, manager Coloiiial Bank, Balclutha, re the financial arrangements pf the Board. The Board adjourned till Saturday, the sth October, at *2.30 p.m.
