CROAKERS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sic, —We have a numher of what arc called croakers amongst us, who arealways predicting the bad time coming. " Things are dull just now," say they ; " but wait a little, and you will see the stagnation' that will'be felt if once the train goes past." Now, Sir, for my own part, I believe we are just as prosperous, and have just as good prospects, as many of'our neighbours. We never had a large through traffic, same as Tokomairiro, to be terminated with the passing of the railway. Our principal traffic has been with the surrounding settlers, and it will be along time before they have the accommodation of banks, stores, tradesmen, &c, in their respective districts to. prevent them coming to Balclutha. For my own pait, I, don't believe the oiaening of | the line through-to Clinton will make any ajjpreciahle 'difference to' the business men of Balcliitlia.' But the opening of that section is yet a long way iv the future, and in the meantime we will have the stir and trade connected with the formation of the railway to Balclutha, and then to Clinton; I presume also we will have some works in progress by the Clutha Kiver 'Trust duyiug the coming winter. Then, there is at present every appearance that the price of produce is to be. good,, and .thus the settlers will have plenty of money. To all croakers I would say, many a township would be glad of the prospect, of the. trade and stir we expect in a few weeks to see.here. • I would also mention' that if once we had the line made to the township, we -will have workshops'established in connection with the railway, and these, I believe, will far more than make tip for all the loss we can sm-: tain. iPor my own part I can. only see a season of prospprity as the near prospect for Balclutha, and I hope all .the..: croak ers. I have referred to will ehher.clear-o.ut'or keep silent.—l am, _c, ••••■■'" 7 V ' Progress.
