PLANTING AVENUES.
'd-' , ; .;.. ■ • -. TO.TH- KDITOU.' ' -..:.... :Slß,— lam sure the : inhabitants of 'Balclutha 'have reason; to 'be thankful to. Mr B. Sogg for : the,: exertion, he has put; forth and tho persis--ten cy "with which: he -"has, urged the ■ planting bf - avenues : 'ih'- the, public ' streets;. I vote' that We put' him -in at the top of the po at the next ejection for this. But,, it surprises me that the
Mayor .and other Councillors should have so much hesitancy, and be so dilatory in the matter.' The Council- has plenty 'of 'momy, and will soon have more/ aricVT hear of no] complaints for want of streets or footpaths. So far as I can see these are in very fair order, and the public is satisfied. If footpaths were urgently required, then I would say make them in preference to planting trees, but if the Mayor intends that we are, to have no avenues until the streets and footpaths are all formed and gravelled and in good order to the door of every private house, then we shall neve: have thorn, and he had better my at once that he object 3 to'the town being ornamented at all. I am sure vhstt so far as outward appeai-anee and comfort is concerned, a few pounds wonld go a. much longor way in plantiug trees than in making streets where they are not required, and where there may be but a very minimum, of traffic for many years to come. I think, Sir, we have now an opportunity of making our township a model of neatness aud cleanness in New Zealand, and I am sure it will be the fault of the Council and ' not the ratepayers if this is riot done. Tho planting of avenues is not a new experiment. It has long, been done elsewhere, and the immense improvement vj.on the appearance aud comfort of the towns and cities is admitted by all. Why then should the Mayor aud some of the Councillors oppose it here ? I believe the inhabitants would willingly see at least £50 expended in this way this winter. — J am, &c., j • ' ■ Ratepayer.
