FOOTBALL.
UNION CLUB V. BALOLUTHA.
This match was played , on. Saturday last in a paddock belonging -to John M'Keil, Esq... adjoining tlie rifle kut'ts, who had kindly lent it "for the occasion. As- his Worship tlie Mayor had. proclaimed a half-holiday, there were about 250 or 300 spectators present. Play, was commenced at 1.20 p.m.,. when, "a heavy shower of rain fell for about a quarter of an hour after starting, after., which the weather cleared up and remaind fine during the rest of the game. The following are the names of the players : Balclutha. — Messrs Stevens, . Raynes, Cowie (captain), Stanbrook, M'Kay, Frier, Mison, M'ifoii, Hendry, Louden, Kilgour, Davis, Algio, Latimer, ..Baxter, Edgar, Lues (Union Club), and Campbell. Union.— -Messrs Grant, Tresedor, Monteith, Israel, Weston, Mcol, Little; Cowie J., (captain), M'Kinnon, Barber; Cowie, Logan, Gihb, Cargill W., Yui'lle, and Chapman.
J. Cowie, the Union captain, won the tosa, and allowed Balclutha to kick .off; the ball was at once returned to the Balclutha end and kept continually hovering about the goal, which was well defended by 11. Barr— who waa playing exceedingly well — and up till half time no score was made, although W. Cowie, Chapman, and Little, had several ea-yy chances. After refreshment, play was resumed, ends having been changed. Duriediii had now a light breeze in their favor, that had suddenly sprung up, and in about a quarter of an hour, M'Kimion kicked -first goal for the Union. Balclutha now tried to get on more even terms with their opponents, Davis, Louden, and A. Cowie especially distinguishing themselves, but- all to no purpose, the Dinedin team doing almost what they pleased with the hall ; aiid they were shortly afterwards, rewarded by W. Cowie obtaining goal number two in fine style, and Cargill showed tho spectators what he was about by securing a tliird before time was called. Messrs ' Israel, Weston, Mcol, and Treseder played well for the Union.
Before Balclutha can expect id cope successfully .whh a club like the Union, they must learn to play moro together, aiid keep, their alloted x'lacos instead of running about indiscriminately, all over tlie field. Improvement in this particular will bring about better results. ""As it was they (lid very well, seeing the short time they have been organised.
Messrs Chas,' Hawson and A.' Kilgour stood as goal limpires: and Mr F. K Smith" of Duiibdin acted as central umpire, and gave great satisfaction. ■ We may also mention flint on the arrival of the Buiicdin team (23. in' number) they had lunch atf the Crown Hotel, and at 3 o'clock Mr Sfcarib'rook had. an excel] ent dinner provided for tliein and a number of tho' 'BaTclutli-a men. With ■whetted apetitfts and good clieei* a pleasant hour was 'spent, 'md much' cheering was indulged in at the Crown Hotel "on' tho departure of tlie visitors by the coaches to' catch the evening train.
