A VILE SLANDER.

TO THB EDITOB. SlB, —Thefollowing appeared in the 'Bruce Herald' of Friday last•.—'' Wo understand that Mr Dunne had a requisition, signed by a large number of influential persons, presented him, requesting that he would allow himself to bo nominated for the office of Mayor, to which he acquiesced, but did not feel disposed to publish the requisition, thinking it. might be prejudicial to some of his supporters' interests. This consideration of supporters by a candidate is in every way commendable, and in keeping with the system of fche ballot-box." Tho only interpretation that anyone can put upon the above paragraph is, that Mr Dunne's character is such that it might be prejudicial to tho interests of the " large number of influential persona" to let the public know that they had asked him to become Mayor of Balclufcha. I look upon the paragraph as a vile slander, and am surprised Mr Dunne has taken no notice of it. The influential gentlemen should at once publish their names, —if for no other reason, to show.to the public that thoy are nofc ashamed of their man, as the ' Herald' represents them to be. If they were to do so, I believe it would bo found that Mr Dunne bears as respectable a character, and is as " influential" as any member of his large committee,—probably more so.—l am, &c, Citizen.
