New name for bridge
The Victoria Square bridge will be renamed the Hamish Hay bridge to mark the services of Sir Hamish Hay to Christchurch. Sir Hamish, who in October completed a record five terms as Christchurch’s Mayor, played a significant role in the city, said his successor, Ms Vicki Buck. Some prominent feature in central Christchurch should be named in his honour, she said. The Victoria Square bridge was particularly appropriate. Sir Hamish was born in the Limes
Hospital where the Christchurch Town Hall stood and spent much of his working life in the family firm, Hays, on the other side of the square. Sir Hamish was happy with the proposal, she said. Councillors favoured the idea of marking Sir Hamish’s 30 years on the council. The bridge, recently opened up to provide river views, was built in 1851 as the Papanui bridge. It has twice been renamed — Market bridge and Victoria Street bridge.
