SI. promotion budget soars
The South Island Promotion Association is seeking $60,000 from the Christchurch City Council towards tourism promotion next year — as well as a further $lBO,OOO from the Canterbury Regional Council. A member of the association’s board, Mr Peter Yeoman, told councillors that it was about to be renamed the South Island Tourism Council. In the new year it would be opening a South Island travel office in Tylon Street, downtown Auckland.
Mr Yeoman said that because the Government was selling Tourist and Publicity Department offices throughout the country, the South Island association faced an increase in its responsibilities. The proposed budget increase was front $170,000 to almost $600,000 a year. Mr Yeoman said Christchurch was a dominant player in the region and was both a destination and a gateway. The city would want a direct say in the operation of the new Auckland office.
