Christchurch pupils win DTP prize

Form I pupils have won Christchurch’s Manning Intermediate School an Apple Macintosh Plus in the “Splendid School Publishing Competition,” organised by the New Zealand distributor for Apple, CED Products. Manning won the primary section, Viard College, of Wellington, the secondary section, and Dilworth School, of Auckland, the staff section. Under the direction of Mrs Anne Poole, a group of Form I ■ pupils at Manning used Timework’s software, Publish It, running on an Apple HE, to prepare a publication modelled on the “School Journal.” The children used the word processor,

Full Text Pro 80, to write and edit the stories, saved them in unformatted files, and imported these into Publish It for page make-up. “The kids had to learn an awful lot,” Mrs Poole said. An editing team of selected pupils refined the material before it was composed. The Mac Plus should make production easier next year. The competitors could use either Publish It or Aldus Pagemaker which, of course, require a Mac (the other stipulation is that competitors must use an Apple).
