N.Z. say on jails
PA Wellington New Zealand has gained representation on the board of a new international body working toward world-wide penal reform. Mr John Whitty, director of the New Zealand Prisoners’ Aid and Rehabilitation Society, said he was elected at a recent
London meeting of Penal Reform International. Mr Whitty said the new organisation was particularly relevant to New Zealand, which had a higher rate of imprisonment than any of the 21 countries on the Council of Europe. He said plans for big reforms by the Minister of Justice, Mr Jeffries, were welcome.
