SPELD attacks Ministry action

Children with specific learning disabilities are having their lives condemned by the Ministry of Education, says the president of SPELD New Zealand, Mrs June Bennett.
The Ministry had refused to release students with specific learning disabilities for special tuition, she said.
Mrs Bennett’s comments were endorsed by Waipa’s National M.P., Mrs Katherine O’Regan, who has a bill before Parliament dealing with specific learning disabilities.
The Ministry of Education was continuing to deny education to children with specific leaning disabilities, such as dyslexia, she said.
“Haven’t they taken any notice of over 1300 submissions to my bill seeking recognition of children with specific learning disabilities?” Mrs O’Regan said the new Education Act had given parents hope that SPELD children would receive assistance during school hours. The directive of the Ministry of Education contradicted the new act. Mrs Bennett said the Ministry of Education was being instransigent about the release of SPELD children during school hours.
“In denying the child’s rights to an education they are condemning the child’s whole life, not just their education,” she said.
The issue will be taken up with the Minister of Education, Mr Goff.
