Boat driver ‘a fireball’

PA Invercargill A Winton man thrown from his jet boat on the Dart River after it hit a rock during a race on Saturday became “a fireball” when the boat exploded. Roger Preston, aged 26, driver of the boat, suffered burns to his face and hands. He was in a comfortable condition in Southland Hospital last evening. His brother Neil, aged 27, who was navigating, was thrown clear of the boat on to the river bank when it struck rock at about 120km/h. .Another brother, Donald Preston, who saw the accident from the main road bridge, said the fuel tanks burst open when the boat overturned, drenching Roger Preston in fuel.
