Science threatened

111 TV Ministerial indecision could soon lead to the “gutting” of New Zealand science, the Opposition’s science spokesman, Mr Simon Upton, asserted on Friday. He said paralysis in science and research policy was emerging on a wide front. Mr Upston said the Minister of Health, Ms Clark, had refused to make decisions on the future of the Medical Research Council. The council had no option but to divert money from researchers towards winding-up costs such as redundancies in . case it was abolished. He said changes in science funding were also causing corrosive uncer-
tainty. “I would say that only two or three months stands between now and the permanent demoralisation and gutting of New Zealand science.” Ms Clark said the Medical Research Council was misleading the public with an impression that medical research will end. The new Health Research Council would continue to fund research, she said. But the new structure and funding had to be decided by the Cabinet, not by her as Minister of Health. Greater priority had to be given to public health research. “That may mean that not as wide a range of biomedical research as in the past can be funded,” she said.
