Classic win in Slipper
Otago correspondent The Oamaru-owned and trained Classic Motoring easily won the New Zealand Golden Slipper Stakes when having his first start at Oamaru on Saturday. Classic Motoring settled third-last on the outer. Kevin Townley sent the colt forward three wide in the open from the 700 m. He surged to the front at the 150 m and drew clear. “He is a very deceptive pacer, taking such a long stride, that he does not appear to be going fast,” Townley said. Classic Motoring, by New York Motoring from Loch End, was bred by Allan Tempero, who races him with Murray Jenkins, the trainer. Classic Motoring is the fifth foal from Loch End, which won three races. Loch End is by Fallacy from Holy Loch, a sister to Holy Hal. Classic Motoring is likely to have his next start in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes at Rotorua on December 30, with Townley the driver. Hey Jude, which made the pace, fought on for second, a nose in front of Antidote, which recorded a game effort after racing in the open throughout. The favourite, Supreme Step, faded to sixth after trailing.
