Payout to apple growers down
The total average payout to apple growers this season will be $7.40 a carton, down 43c on last season, says the Apple and Pear Board.
In spite of the drop, the payout will be the thirdhighest return made to growers, said the board’s chairman, Mr John McCliskie, yesterday. The previous season’s payout of $7.83 a carton included $l.lO from the now defunct Price Stablisation Fund. This season’s results were achieved in spite of difficult marketing conditions, said Mr McCliskie. Apple production was down more than a million cartons on the previous year; but gross turnover was up 7 per cent to $434 million.
Higher average prices achieved this season in overseas markets were eroded by increased costs, such as freight charges, adverse foreign exchange movements and interest rate movements.
