AUSTRALIA Gold pulls shares down

NZPA-AAP Sydney An overnight slump in the price of gold pushed prices lower on the Australian sharemarket yesterday. The gold marker dived 64.9 points, or 3.7%, to 1686.6 as the price of bullion in late local business fell to SUS4OI.IO/401.60 an ounce from its previous close here of 5U5412.20/60. “The fall in gold took all the enthusiasm out of the market after yesterday’s run," a broker said. “The market is waiting for two things — lower interest rates which is tied to a fall in the Aussie dollar, but Keating (the Australian Treasurer) tried to put a dampener on that overnight. It’s also waiting for good metal prices and the fall in gold overnight didn’t help sentiment much.” Turnover was boosted by trading in Wormaid where 25.41 million shares traded, mostly in three special sales at 225 c a share, believed to be the AFP Group selling down its stake. Wormaid closed 1c higher at 235. The industrial sector was held together by demand for the banks. The ANZ rose 4c to 588, and the National Australia 6c to 710, but Westpac was steady at 568. Market leader, BHP, fell 4c to 924 and Coles Myer and Coca Cola Amatil both lost 10c to 826 and 1150 respectively. Brambles, however, added 20c to 1350. The Bond group of companies recorded mixed fortunes, with Bond Corporation adding 1c to 21, Bell Resources down 3c to 47, the Bell Group off 2c to 46, and Bond Media down 1c to 15. Westmex was the biggest casualty of the day, closing 19c lower at 40 after plunging

to an all-time low of 37c. Turnover was brisk with 2.7 M shares traded. FAI Insurances, however, reversed the weaker trend of recent days, adding 25c to 240. It is believed County Securities were strong buyers of FAI.

In the gold sector, Metana shed 12c to 223, Placer Pacific lost 11c to 324, and Renison fell 6c to 880. The heavyweight miners were also weaker, with CRA down 15c to 1090 and Western Mining off 18c to 636. North Broken Hill, however, added 5c to 276.
