Refugees to get clothing

PA Wellington New Zealanders have given more than two tonnes of woollen clothing and blankets to keep refugee children in Hong Kong warm in the nearfreezing northern winter. New Zealand Save the Children Fund nurse, Ms Liz Nicholls, requested assistance last month because large numbers of Vietnamese children in refugee camps were facing winter temperatures of 4deg. and needed warm clothing immediately. Appeal co-ordinator Mr Jim Austen said the response was overwhelming. “About one-third of donations have been new clothing. Contributions have been far greater than we envisaged,” he said. Volunteers recently packed the first cargo of blankets and clothing to be flown to Hong Kong by Air New Zealand for immediate distribution.
