DARTS

Fresh from his Canterbury soft-tip darts singles title, Arthur Ayres combined with Peter O’Connor to dominate the men’s Canterbury pairs championship at the Avonhead Tavern.

Ayres and O’Connor were unbeaten during the elimination rounds, but received tough opposition in the final from Gerry Hopkins and Stewart Harper.

Robin Howman and Peter Haddock finished third, a remarkable placing for the pair’s first attempt at championship competition.

The women’s title went to the outstanding Alma Meates and Shirley Bernstein. The women’s teams were evenly matched, but Meates and Bernstein finally prevailed over the runnersup, Pat Rosewame and Doreen Sydes, 2-1. Results:—

Men: Arthur Ayres and Peter O’Connor, 1; Gerry Hopkins and Stewart Harper, 2; Robin Howman and Peter Haddock, 3. Women: Alma Meates and Shirley Bernstein, 1; Pat Rosewarne and Doreen Sydes, 2; Denise Burgess and Rachael Frater, 3.

BUILDING DESIGN The site was the old city gas works. It was chosen because of its easy access and egress to and from Moorhouse Avenue and Iverson Terrace to the rear. It was also equal distance from the two sites in Waltham Road and Ferry Road respectively. The Christchurch architect Jonty Rout from the partnership Sheppard and Rout was asked to design the building. “Their brief was quite specific and detailed. To meet these requirements we had essentially to learn how a hire company operates. The brief was to expand the drive in, drive out concept of the Manchester Street depot except it was to be twice as big with two lane parking, covered expanded display areas, a large counter area and room for the storage of the major plant. Considerable thought went into the problem of Christchurch’s norwester. The resulting layout provides Hirequip with a building that has a high profile on Moorhouse Avenue and presents a clear and easily accessible centre for the pick up and return of equipment.” Davis Ogilvie and Partners were responsible for the structural work.
