Early release

Sir,—l notice with interest the Government’s latest scheme for early parole of short-term prisoners. At the same time the Government announces a holiday job-subsidy package for students, which does not apply to labouring, the hotel industry and other unskilled work (the main areas

of student employment) I suggest that all the students who cannot find vacation employment to go on a drinking spree after examinations, during which they commit a few burglaries and assaults, then turn themselves into the police. The result? A sixmonth sentence, parole in three, and they have had a three-month holiday, cost free. The money saved can go towards next year’s fees

— Yours, etc., C. A. HUTCHINSON, October 18, 1989.
