Kiwi hatched

The first kiwi to be hatched in captivity in the South Island is being kept warm in the quarantine unit at Orana Park. Named Orana, it hatched almost two weeks ago and will remain isolated in a specially-designed brooder for the next eight weeks. Orana Park has been interested in breeding kiwis since the first arrived in 1984 but the promotion officer for Orana Park, Mrs Bev Shephard, said the difficulty had been in finding a compatible couple and the right environment for breeding.
