Foreign purchases

Sir,—One must be a New Zealand citizen to take up and own shares in Air New Zealand, yet absentee overseas landlords who are neither citizens nor residents of our country may purchase large amounts of New Zealand land without restriction. This is, indeed, a strange priority. About 150 years ago the' Maori people lost land through not understanding the foreign idea of land ownership. We would be stupid not to learn from this experience. — Yours, etc.,

P. C. SUMPTER. September 4, 1989.
