Radio idea ‘boring’

A suggestion that Christchurch City Council meetings should be broadcast live on radio has been dismissed by one election candidate as both impractical and boring for the listeners. Mr Noel Wesney, the “founder of Radio Avon and its executive director for eight years, said live council broadcasts would tend to be disjointed and confusing for listeners.

The proposal to broadcast .council meetings was put forward by Mr Jamie Tulloch, on behalf of the Christchurch Action Team, who said broadcasts would ensure accountability of councillors on vital decisions affecting the management of the city. Mr Wesney, a United Citizens candidate -in the Hagley ward, said he doubted whether any professional broadcasting organisation would be interested in carrying live broadcasts of council meetings.

He said the Action team had shown they had little understanding of the medium and were creating policy on the run.
