Five rescued from big surf

Five people were pulled from heavy surf at Scarborough after two incidents in little more than an hour yesterday. Canoeists and paddleboarders taking advantage of big waves and strong offshore winds caused the alerts at 11.50 a.m. and 1 p.m. Members of the Sumner Lifeboat Institution were involved in both rescues using the lifeboat Marion McTeigue.
Three canoeists were forced to abandon their craft between Scarborough Head and the area known as the Downpipe in the first of the call-outs. No-one was hurt.
About 1 p.m., three paddleboarders were reported in difficulties off, the Scarborough breakwater. Two were taken aboard the lifeboat, but the other headed back in to the surf. The lifeboat institution’s honorary secretary, Mr Walter Baguley, urged kayak enthusiasts to take more care in heavy weather. “They should adopt a buddy system to look after each other in trouble. They may be experienced kayakers, but they are unaware of local conditions,” he said. Rescue workers coped with the two incidents coming close together, with the Sumner Surf Life-saving Club also on alert in case its inshore rubber craft was required. “We were wondering if we were going to get any lunch, but prepared for other calls in the afternoon,” Mr Baguley said.
No other incidents were reported.
