Apollo Run’s odds shorten
NZPA-AAP Melbourne Apollo Run emerged as the biggest shortener for the Caulfield Cup after his narrow win in the sAust3ol,ooo Craiglee Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. The five-year-old chestnut, fourth in last year’s Melbourne Cup, had his Caulfield Cup price slashed from 25-1 to 12-1.
Bookmaker Syd Lyons said Apollo Run was steady on the second line of betting for the Melbourne Cup at 10-1. Imported stayer Almaarad, which looked unlucky when beaten in a photo by Apollo Run, has been tightened from 20-1 to 12-1 in the Caulfield Cup and 20-1 to 10-1 in the Melbourne Cup. “He impressed me the way he went to the line,” Lyons said. “He’s obviously a very good horse and a big chance in the cups,” he said. Super Impose is a steady second favourite at 8-1 for the Caulfield Cup after finishing third in the Craiglee. The Tommy Smithtrained Stargazer gave his Caulfield Cup chances a lift when he scored impressively in the Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill. Lyons cut his price from 16-1 to 12-1, while Concordance was the other notable mover in betting, firming from 50-1 to 25-1 in both cups. Concordance came with a. strong finish to beat Sydestbn and Our Watchman in the Lord Mayor’s PlateJ (2000 m at Fleming-
ton on Saturday. Vo Rogue again disappointed in Sydney when he was unplaced in the Theo Marks Quality Handicap (1300 m but Lyons has kept him at 14-1 for the Caulfield Cup. “It doesn’t look like he’s comfortable racing the Sydney way,” he said. West Australian Belele is favourite for the Caulfield Cup at 7-1, while Research and Waiau Pal are equal favourites at 7-1 for the Melbourne Cup, ahead of Almaarad, Apollo Run and New Zealander Na Botto.
