The Gentry’s plans upset
The spring campaign of the New Zealand Derby winner, The Gentry, is being compromised by a wet spring in Auckland and it is possible his attempt on the Cox Plate will be abandoned if insufficient lead-up racing is available. “He should really be racing now if he’s to be at his peak for those big races. “He is of little use on wet tracks and we don’t really want to risk him on them. If we get held up much longer we could pull the plug on Melbourne and go to Australia in the autumn instead,” his part-owner, Keith Haub, said last week. The Gentry has come up well since being sidelined after his win in the Air New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie in February. An infection almost cost him his life then, but he appears to have bounced back in fine fettle. The Gentry’s controversial Melbourne Cup weight (55.5 kg dismayed his connections in some ways, but was of no real consequence. “He shouldn’t have been entered really. There was never any chance he would run in it,” Mr Haub said.
