14 p.c. rise in rate of abortions

By

CLARE BARRY

The rise of 14 per cent in the abortion rate in 1988 points to the need for more sex education, says a spokeswoman for the Family Planning Association, Ms Barbara Lusk.

Ms Lusk said the rise, from 8789 abortions in 1987 to 10,044 in 1988, did not reflect an increasingly casual attitude to sex. Abortion was a difficult decision which few women made casually. The Family Planning Association’s ideal would be for women to be able to make the decision that they did not want a child “before the eleventh hour.”

To do this they needed education so they knew what choices were available and how to put them into effect.

Ms Lusk said many recent reports had commented on the need for human relations and development courses in primary, intermediate and secondary schools. “With education, people will not just drift into sex but make decisions about it,” she said.
