Auckland beats Easts

PA Auckland It was not Auckland's attacking qualities but its defensive screen which ground down the Sydney rugby league club, Eastern Suburbs, at Carlaw Park last night. Auckland, who earlier in the season defeated the Kangaroos, won 26-12. The Glenora prop, Greg Hiley, was the outstanding Auckland player. There was a scare when the new Kiwi, Dean Clark, was taken off by stretcher in the twenty-ninth minute, raising doubts about his tour hopes. Clark, however, is given a good chance of making the tour to Britain and France. Scorers: Auckland 26 (N. Ramsay, N. Timoko, T. Nikau, M. Patton, G. Hiley tries, P. Bancroft 3 conversions) beat Eastern Suburbs 12 (C. Salvatori, S. Morris tries, T. Dwyer 2 conversions). Half-time: 12-12.
