Dr McKay saves the day
It’s Thursday, it’s freezing and there’s no heat' We arrived at school to see some teachers huddled around the boiler room,, some holding cups of steaming hot coffee, others hugging themselves. The furnace had been going earlier that morning but there was so much coal on it that it clogged up and wouldn’t go. Our headmaster, Dr McKay, had to go in and shovel some of it out. When he came out he was black from head to toe. He had coal dust all over his hands, in his hair, and coming out of his nose and mouth.
As he was telling off some kids who had misbehaved, he noticed they were laughing. One look at his black hands was enough! Later, someone in his maths group wanted to know if he'd been eating black jelly beans.
Our classes started to warm up later than morning, thanks to Dr McKay.
