Carpet tariffs review

Wellington reporter The Government is stepping up the pace again on lowering protection for the carpet industry. The Minister of Commerce, Mr Butcher, yesterday announced an earlier than expected review of carpet tariffs. Earlier this year, the Government brought forward the date from which duty-free

access under Closer Economic Relations (C.E.R.) would come into force. Carpet has been governed by an Industry Plan since 1985, with only one category — synthetic carpet over 4 square metres — still due to come off import licensing by January, 1993, at the latest.’ A Ministry of Commerce spokeswoman said the review was being held now.
