Lincoln’s finance courses popular

By

Patrick Mclennan

The number of enrolments in new financial studies courses at Lincoln College has surprised the head of the accounting and valuation department. Professor Roger Juchau said yesterday his initial projections for graduates in accounting and finance had proved wrong. On current trends Lincoln will be graduating over 100 students in accounting by 1991. Lincoln College’s elevation to. university status next year was gaining momentum. Schools and students were obviously looking seriously at Lincoln College as an institution able to provide a high level degree in commerce, he said. The Government had not yet legislated Lincoln College’s elevation to Lincoln University, however, the then Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer,

made a pledge to do so earlier this year. Professionals whom the college dealt with had been informed of the name change, he said. The university would not be expanding further than its traditional strengths. “There will be nothing like English departments. We’ll be focusing on traditional strength areas such as agriculture and science.”

Recent developments in parks and recreation, environment and commerce would continue, Professor Juchau said.

He was pleased Christchurch mayoral candidates had picked up on the idea of the region as an educational centre. “The change (to a university) will provide us with autonomy. It will enable us to deal with national priorities that emerge. New Zealand requires a responsive university system, and we will be more responsive.”
