Cholmondeley to subdivide land

By PATRICK Mclennan

Cholmondeley Children’s Home may subdivide land that was previously "something of a liability” into 15 residential lots.

Approval was given by the Mount Herbert County Council last evening, with a provision that the lots be liable to annual water and sewerage charges when they become separately rateable. The county chairman, Mr Dave Collins, estimated the land, which was originally bought to provide a water supply for the home, averaged about half an acre a lot, each of which could return about $50,000. The home no longer needed the land because of the new public water

supply in Governor’s Bay, he said. The lots had been available for about a year. One had been bought by the Fire Service and the council had also bought one to establish a reserve. “It’s been something of a liability — the children’s home is getting rid of something they’re no longer really interested in.”

The council’s town planning and community services committee recommended that each lot must have sewerage and high water connections to the council’s system, stormwater connections, and buyers must make a contribution of $7982 towards the cost of extending the sewage treatment plant
