Housing funds sought

Funds will be sought from the Housing Corporation, the Minister of Finance, the Lottery Board and the Social Welfare Department for a $1.2 million women’s housing project proposed by the Christchurch City Council. The project is for 11 units for women in Cecil Place, Waltham. The units would be for mature women (four), young solo mothers (five) and the disabled (two). Communal

kitchen, laundry and dining areas would be built for all but the disabled units. The project was proposed by the Housing for Women Trust, which would be the principal tenant. The funding package outlined to the council’s property and promotion committee yesterday was $200,000 from the council’s housing development fund, a $350,000 subsidy

from the Government, $lOO,OOO grant from the Lottery Board and the Social Welfare Department, $600,000 as a 7 per cent loan from the Housing Corporation, and land from the council valued at $150,000.

The council’s director of housing and property, -Mr Bill Morgan, said funds from the housing development fund could be used to offset the loan servicing requirement.
