RELAY RUNNING Teams from the Sumner Running Club finished first, second and third in the F.A.I. Metropolitan Life Port Hills relay on Saturday. The Sumneer veteran women’s C team started from 29 minutes behind the front markers and moved through the field to win by just over five minutes from the the club’s top senior women’s team, which started from 45 minutes. Only eleven seconds behind was the Sumner veteran men’s C team, which started from 43 minutes.

More glory came Sumner’s way with the veteran women’s A team, which is the New Zealand champion veteran women’s relay team, breaking its own record set in 1976 — its first-lap runner, Colleen Bardsley, breaking her own women’s and veteran women’s records. Bardsley has rightly earned a reputation as an uphill specialist, holding several such road records. Sumner also finished in the top three on time in the senior men, veteran men and senior women, as well as taking first, second and third fastest times for veteran women's teams.

On the short fourth lap Mary O’Connor (University) broke the 1985 record held by her club-mate, Joan Merrifield. O’Connor normally runs the longer tougher laps, for which she has set records in the past. She now holds three of the five women’s lap records. O’Connor, was sixth fastest runner from 85 who ran the lap. Prue Taylor (University), running in the senior women’s team, eclipsed the veteran women’s record on the second lap, while Kevin O’Sullivan (University), also running as a senior, broke the veteran record for the second lap, set by John Macdonald in 1981.

O’Sullivan was runner-up to John Cambell in the veteran men's national cross-country championship a week ago. Results.—
