Win secures championship for Brighton

New Brighton secured the southern league second division soccer championship with a 1-0 • cer Cashmere, at Somen. 1 Park on Saturday. An own goal after four minutes was enough to give New Brighton its third successive title and it now goes on to play Southland United, the runaway winner of the Otago-Southland league, for a place in the first division next season.

New Brighton should have taken a handy lead by halftime, but missed some useful openings and in the last 10 minutes had to withstand a lot of pressure from Cashmere. It held on to win and took the title by four points from Halswell United, which was held to a 3-3 draw by Woolston W.M.C.

In other games South Canterbury sealed third place with a 2-0 win over Shamrock and University finished a creditable fourth with a 1-0 win over St Albans-Shirley.

In a first division match the new champion, Burndale United, has its free-scoring striker, Jeff Hawker, notch his third hat-trick of the season, in its 7-1 win over Mosgiel at Burnside Park. He finished with 18 goals in 18 games to easily top the scorers’ list from his teammates John Hanson (13) and

Steve Toohey (10). Brent Berry, of Christchurch United, also got 10. Burndale’s 57-goal total was the highest recorded since the league was reintroduced three years ago and was its fourth seven-goal tally of the season.

The fullback, Craig Kerr, opened the scoring with his first strike in three years, but Mosgiel equalised, after a defensive rm up, through Robbie Strawford, his eighth goal of the year. Peter Ross set ball rolling for Burndale in the second half and it over-rar its opponent, Hawker (3), Hanson and the player-coach, Graeme Archer, pushing it to a big win. At Rangers Park, goals by Jeff Blackburn, Dean McKay and Paul Welford (penalty) gave Rangers a 3-0 win over Rangiora in a first round Hertz Cup knockout match. Dunedin City downed Caversham, 3-2, in another Cup match in Dunedin. Final second division points:
