Marsh player of year
The popular Howzat player, Julian Marsh, was named the men’s indoor cricketer of the year at a ceremony on Saturday evening. An opening batsman, Marsh played a vital role in his team’s winning of the premiership. His reliability with the bat ensured his side got a sound start, a big factor in its winning form. He averaged 35.16 for the season, second only to his team-mate, Ted Nicholl.
At the bowling crease his lively medium-pace deliveries took wickets at crucial times and he conceded an
average of 8.83 per over. Marsh was an excellent frontcourt fielder and also adapted well to other positions with his accurate throwing arm and good pair of hands. The woman's indoor cricketer of the year was Maia Lewis, aged 19, a member of the successful Russley side. An aggressive batswoman who usually plays at No. 4, Lewis averaged 42. She is an accurate slowmedium pace bowler and an outstanding fielder in the front court.
According to the Russley coach, Steve Logan, Lewis is an excellent team person with great match-winning potential. Other 1989 indoor cricket awards were:— Men’s junior player of the year, Brian Ford; women’s junior player of the year, Katrina Withers; most, improved men’s player, Gary Thompson; most improved women’s player, Justine Russell; best-presented team, North Canterbury men; umpire of the year, Peter Harman; centre of the year, North Canterbury.
