Otago battles to beat Southland

PA Dunedin Otago struggled to an unconvincing 24-16 win over Southland in the representative rugby match at Carisbrook on Saturday. Otago dominated possession but was unable to make headway Otago led, 15-0, at halftime after a try by John Haggart and a conversion and three penalties by Greg Cooper. Haggart scored his try after 14 minutes, after Paul Henderson drove away from a ruck and flipped Haggart the pass.

Southland reduced the deficit to nine points early in the second spell with two penalties by Eoin Crossan, but Otago extended its lead to 24-6 with another penalty by Cooper and a try to Brent Pope. However, Southland emerged from the game with a lot of credit and scored two good tries in the last 10 minutes.
