Waste disposal

Sir,—"Natural waste disposal” techniques (August 16) are an exciting option for working with nature to treat waste and cleanse water. Types of constructed wetlands for waste disposal have been established, particularly in Northland. Wetland plants have phenomenal capacity to convert and store different waste, even toxic chemicals, but natural wetlands must be protected. Constructed wetlands for waste disposal are an option for dealing with pollution from farms, factories, housing, and urban runoff. Further trials are required to test appropriate wetland plants and management requirements in South Island conditions. These wetland systems have the potential to avoid the expensive construction and running costs of mechanical treatment plants which many businesses or small communities cannot afford. Traditional “hard” technology is not the only option. More integrated environmental management is urgently needed. The new regional government provides an opportunity for integrated strategies for better and sustainable management of Canterbury. We must ensure that these opportunities are taken. — Yours, etc., DI LUCAS. August 16, 1989.
