Waterfront
Sir,—ln his letter on waterfront matters recently, L. Wells applauds the Waterfront Industry Commission as an efficient body in a very complex industry and implies that farmers want to break the watersiders’ and seamen’s unions. If by that he means a change to a simple system whereby waterfront labour is employed directly by port companies if and when required, then that is what will happen. The demise of the Waterfront Industry Commission
from October 1 will remove not an efficient body but a major impediment to proper accountability for wharf costs. This body has existed for years maintaining and setting wage rates for watersiders, while in no way having the responsibility of affording those costs. L. Wells has obviously been away for a while because the facts are that employment conditions that were set up in the days of sailing ships are no longer appropriate, nor are they affordable for exporters in the twentieth century. — Yours, etc.,
D. T. ARCHBOLD. August 15, 1989.
