Dispute traps ferry in Dunedin
The refurbished ferry Arahura, due in Lyttelton today, has been trapped in Dunedin by a dispute with the Seamen’s Union, the Railways Corporation said last evening. The chief executive of the Railways Corporation, Mr Kevin Hyde, said the seamen were claiming two weeks pay for the three day voyage to Dunedin for the refit. He said the Seamen’s Union was demanding a 14-day minimum payment for its members who sailed
’ the Arahura to Dunedin. 1 He said the union claimed it was ! customary in the industry to make a 14-day payment for voyages such as the trip to Dunedin for the refit. He said the corporation had told , the union it would make only those » payments legally required by the > award. The Arahura had been due in ; Lyttelton for the day and further promotional visits to Picton and i Wellington during the week.
He said the corporation was disappointed at the attitude of the union.
“The current action, and the effect it will have on a return to Wellington in time for the August school holidays, is little short of blackmail."
The action was an illegal strike and the corporation would be applying to the Labour Court today for a hearing on the dispute.
The union was not available for comment last evening.
