Driver appeals

Wayne Banks, a drink-driver imprisoned after a Pakuranga couple were killed in a car crash, is appealing against his 4>/ 2 -year jail sentence. Banks was convicted on four charges after a High Court judge, Mr Justice Thorp, dropped a manslaughter charge against him after a hearing in chambers. Mr Justice Sinclair sentenced Banks in the High Court at Auckland on two charges of reckless driving causing death and two of driving with an excess blood alcohol count causing death. The maximum sentence under the Transport Act is five years jail. His Honour said: “It may be the time has arrived for the authorities to consider whether that penalty ought to be increased.” He also disqualified Banks from driving for at least 10 years.—PA.
